Upper Back Pain Not Improving? It May Not Be a Back Problem | Acupuncture Case auckland | shoulder blade pain acupuncture
This patient had upper back pain between the shoulder blades for more than 10 years. The pain was constant, reaching up to 6/10 at its worst.
Many people would think this is a simple back problem.
But in this case, the real cause was not in the back.
On examination, pressing the scalene muscles in the neck reproduced the exact same upper back pain. This indicates involvement of the dorsal scapular nerve, commonly related to C5 nerve irritation.
This is a typical example of referred pain — where the source of pain is different from where it is felt.
A precise acupuncture technique was applied to release the tension around the nerve pathway. The needle was inserted briefly and removed within seconds.
Immediately after treatment, the upper back pain disappeared.
This case shows that many chronic upper back pain conditions are not caused by the back itself, but by nerve-related issues from the neck.
