Wrist Pain Not Improving? It May Not Be a Wrist Problem | Acupuncture Auckland
Acupuncture Treatment for Wrist Pain in Auckland
Wrist pain not improving after rest, physiotherapy, or even scans?
In many cases, the problem is not actually in the wrist.
If treatment only focuses on the local area, the real cause can easily be missed — and the pain keeps coming back.
At PhD Win Acupuncture Clinic Auckland, we take a different approach.
We don’t just look at the wrist.
We look at the whole pathway.
Why Wrist Pain Does Not Improve
Most wrist pain treatments focus on:
- Tendon strain
- TFCC injury
- Local inflammation
But in many cases:
- The wrist has no clear structural damage
- Movement is not significantly restricted
- Pain pattern does not match a local injury
👉 The real issue is often:
- Nerve irritation (ulnar nerve / median nerve)
- Compression from shoulder or chest (thoracic outlet)
- Muscle tension along the arm pathway
If this is not addressed, local treatment will not solve the problem.
Symptoms That Need Re-evaluation
You may need a different diagnosis if you have:
- Wrist pain with no clear injury
- Pain worse when pushing or extending the hand
- Pain on the ulnar (little finger) side
- Tingling or unusual sensation in the hand
- Pain traveling from shoulder to arm to wrist
- No improvement after weeks or months of treatment
What Wrist Pain Really Means
In many chronic cases, wrist pain is not a joint problem.
👉 It is often related to nerve pathway irritation.
For example:
- Ulnar nerve sensitivity
- Median nerve involvement
- Compression in the pectoralis minor space
- Thoracic outlet-related tension
When the nerve is affected upstream, the pain appears in the wrist — but the source is elsewhere.
How We Treat Wrist Pain
At PhD Win Acupuncture Clinic, treatment focuses on:
- Identifying the real source of pain
- Releasing deep muscle tension
- Improving nerve pathway function
Techniques include:
- Targeted acupuncture
- Deep muscle release
- Cupping therapy
- Functional adjustment
👉 The goal is not just pain relief, but restoring normal function and preventing recurrence.
Clinical Case — Wrist Pain That Was Not a Wrist Injury
This patient had pain on the ulnar side of the left wrist for two months, especially when pushing the hand backward.
On examination:
- No tenderness in the wrist
- Full range of motion
- Normal reflexes
But there was altered sensation along the ulnar side.
Further assessment found tenderness in the pectoralis minor region, with pain radiating into the arm and hand.
👉 Diagnosis:
Thoracic outlet-related nerve compression affecting the ulnar nerve pathway.
Treatment:
Acupuncture was applied to the anterior shoulder (pectoralis minor area).
Result:
After three sessions:
- Wrist pain almost completely resolved
- Function significantly improved
Some mild travelling discomfort remained, indicating ongoing nerve recovery.
