Arm Pain Not Improving? It May Not Be a Disc Problem — Acupuncture Treatment in Auckland
PhD Win Acupuncture Clinic – Mt Albert, Auckland
Helping patients with arm pain, nerve pain, and chronic shoulder–arm conditions
Arm Pain Is Not Always From the Arm
Arm pain is often explained as a “disc problem” or a “pinched nerve in the neck.”
But in many cases, this explanation is not complete.
Some patients feel pain from the neck, spreading to the shoulder, down the arm, even into the fingers.
They may already have MRI scans or have tried different treatments, but the pain does not improve.
In these situations, the problem is often not only in the spine.
👉 It may come from irritation of the nerve along its pathway.
You May Have This Type of Arm Pain If
- Pain travels from neck → shoulder → arm → hand
- Pain is worse at night or when lying down
- Numbness or dull feeling in fingers (especially thumb or index finger)
- Tenderness in the neck or shoulder blade area
- Previous treatments did not give stable relief
Case Study 1 — Severe Pain for 2.5 Years, Relieved in One Minute
This patient had severe pain in the neck, shoulder, and arm for more than 2.5 years.
The pain area was wide and intense. He had imaging done and was told it could be related to the cervical spine.
During examination, pressing a specific point in the neck reproduced his exact pain pattern —
spreading to the shoulder blade and down the arm.
After applying pressure to this point,
the pain was immediately relieved.
This type of response suggests the pain is not from a single nerve root (such as C7),
but from irritation along the nerve pathway.
Case Study 2 — Night Arm Pain Radiating to the Thumb
This patient came with:
- Severe arm pain at night
- Pain spreading from upper arm → forearm → thumb
- Dull sensation between thumb and index finger
On examination:
- Tenderness between neck and shoulder blade
- Symptoms reproduced with local pressure
This pattern is consistent with nerve irritation,
likely involving the radial nerve and surrounding structures.
What Changed After Treatment
After the first session:
- Sharp pain changed to mild tingling
- Pain reduced from whole arm to a smaller area
- Sleep improved
- Able to lie in different positions
- Shoulder tenderness disappeared
Real Patient Results
Pain from neck to arm, not improved with medication
“My mum had pain on her left arm near the elbow for 3 weeks. Painkillers did not help.
Dr Win found the problem was from the neck — nerve and muscle too tight, causing pain from the neck down to the arm.
After the first treatment, she could sleep. After a few sessions, she felt much better.”

Severe nerve pain, improved after one session
“Severe nerve pain in neck, shoulder, and arm. Could not lift arm without using the other hand.
After about 20 minutes treatment, I had nearly full range, minimal pain, and neck tightness gone.
It was worth the 5-hour drive.”

Misdiagnosed case, surgery did not solve the problem
“I had numb arms for years and had surgery for carpal tunnel. But symptoms did not improve.
After treatment, my arms feel lighter and circulation better.”

Why Previous Treatments May Not Work
Many treatments focus on:
- Disc problems
- Local muscle pain
But may miss:
👉 nerve irritation along its pathway
👉 deep muscle tension affecting the nerve (such as scalene muscles)
This is why:
- MRI findings do not match symptoms
- Relief is temporary or unstable
Our Clinical Approach
At PhD Win Acupuncture Clinic, we focus on:
- Identifying the real source of the pain
- Finding key points that reproduce symptoms
- Releasing nerve irritation at its origin
