[ PhD Win Medical Case] Spasm from neck to the head, face, tongue, throat, stomach , leg for10 years
The condition has persisted for about 10 years, occurring 1-2 times a week, each episode lasting approximately 5-10 minutes.
What possible conditions come to your mind?
Please share your opinion. Thank you.
I will provide my opinion and details about her case later. (04/02/2025)
The patient came in for treatment today. She feels much better, both physically and mentally. The pain in the left side of her neck and upper back has reduced by 30%, which she can now tolerate without suffering. The pain in her neck has also decreased significantly, and she hasn’t had any episodes of facial spasms. Treatment is ongoing.(05/02/2025)
Her Story and My Opinion
Ten years ago, she experienced a horrifying event where someone attempted to kill her by strangling her neck with their hands. She was on the verge of death but managed to break free and survive. Without knowing this traumatic event, it might be difficult to fully understand her condition.
After this event, she suffered from prolonged anxiety and depression, along with chronic left-sided neck pain.
While the chronic neck pain was tolerable, she relied on painkillers and various treatments. However, when her neck muscles went into spasm, she would experience severe full-body convulsions, starting from her face, spreading to her stomach and legs, resembling a seizure.
During these episodes, she would relive the traumatic moment of being strangled, as if the event were happening again, until the spasms subsided.
Another notable trigger is when she lies down and closes her eyes—this often leads to full-body spasms.
She underwent CT, MRI, and EMG, all of which showed negative results. Additionally, all neurological examinations were normal.
Based on these findings, I believe she is suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), accompanied by Functional Neurological Disorder (FND).
Therefore, in addition to treating her physical symptoms, we are also providing psychotherapy to address the underlying trauma. (06/02/2025)

(06/02/2025))
