A 12-Year-Old Girl Who Had Been Afraid of Sleepovers Because of Bedwetting

Dr Win Patient Feedback

This young patient was around 12 years old and had been struggling with bedwetting for several years.

Her family reported that the problem had started when she was about seven. Over time, it became a major source of worry for her, especially after an episode of bedwetting during a camp.

After that, she became increasingly anxious about staying away from home overnight. Sleepovers with friends, school camps and other overnight activities became something she was afraid of rather than something she could enjoy.

At home, her grandmother would often wake her during the night, usually around 1 am, and ask her to go to the toilet. If she was not woken, there was always the worry that she might wet the bed again.

The problem had also begun to affect her sleep and confidence. During camps or overnight stays, she sometimes asked other children to wake her if they got up to use the toilet, because she was so worried about having another accident.

Over the years, her family had already sought medical help and she had undergone different assessments and treatments. While living in Australia, she had also tried Chinese medicine and acupuncture, but the bedwetting had continued.

Her grandmother had previously been treated by Dr Win Huang in Auckland and had known him for many years. During the September school holiday, she brought her granddaughter from Australia to Auckland for approximately two weeks of treatment.

The improvement was not immediate.

During the treatment period, the girl still had another episode of bedwetting. Her grandmother reported that the bed and two layers of protective bedding were wet. The girl was very upset and did not sleep well that night. At that point, she was disappointed and worried that the problem had not been resolved.

Around the end of September, she returned to Australia.

Then the situation began to change.

On 7 October, the girl herself sent Dr Win a message:

“Good news! Since I came back from New Zealand, it hasn’t happened again. I know to get up by myself now. 😊”

This was an important change. She was no longer relying on her grandmother to wake her during the night and was beginning to wake by herself when she needed to use the toilet.

The family continued to observe her after that.

On 31 October, nearly one month after she had returned to Australia, her grandmother contacted the clinic again. She expressed her gratitude and reported that her granddaughter was still doing very well, with no return to the previous bedwetting pattern.

For a child who had spent years worrying about sleepovers, school camps and waking during the night, this was much more than simply having a dry bed. It meant that she was beginning to regain confidence in something that had affected her daily life for many years.
